In the recent history of movie making I continue to see Hip Hop dudes and Pop singers making the crossover into mainstream movies. Now let me get this straight, I don’t have a problem if they want to make a street dancing movie or a gangster rap/sci-fi feature, but due to their lack of training and liability OF getting injured on THE job, I do have a problem when they try to make the transition into Hardcore Action.
As far as I am concerned there are three professions that lead to a natural progression into action stardom. 1) Body Building 2) Boxing and or Martial Arts and the most natural evolution 3) Professional Wrestling. With the recent success of Stone Cold, Jon Cena and the more complex action star Dwayne Johnson on the big screen, I thought it would be fitting to give some history on this exciting subject.
It was 1987 when “Rowdy” Roddy Piper defeated Adrian Adonis at Wrestlemania III and his clean impressive victory caught the eye of talent scout/big time movie director John Carpenter. Piper then took off the kilt and put on his sunglasses to be immediately cast as the rugged lead Nada, in the 1988 instant classic “They Live”.
This movie was and still is so fresh, innovative, inspiring and groundbreaking in so many ways. This concept of aliens taking over the identity of human beings expecting to easily take over the world has been re-hashed and failed in just about every Will Smith movie since Piper's outstanding achievement.
The reason why this action piece is so great: Piper is downright dirty and mean, with impressive one liners, cool jeans, street smarts and his toughness to this day is second to none. The Badass, Road House henchman, Keith David and Piper throw down in the most epic of all back alley brawls in movie history! This fight lasted for 15 minutes with broken 2x4’s, bottles, car windows, numerous German and fisherman Suplexes, DDT’s and bulldogs onto the pavement, lots of biting, low blows and eye gouging too. All this and they were best friends.
Piper was in this movie for two reasons, “To Chew Bubble Gum and Kick Ass and He Just Ran Out Of Bubble Gum”. Today’s up & coming Professional Wrestlers should learn a lesson from Piper and stay away from Hogan’s “Mr. Nanny” when making the move to Big Time Movies.
